Taiwan investors in northern Vietnam enhancing anti-virus efforts

Taiwan's electronics firms with manufacturing operations in northern Vietnam have all strengthened anti-virus measures following recent Covid-19 infections in two provinces, Hai Duong and Quang Ninh, so as to prevent their production from being disrupted, according to industry sources.

This is despite the fact that almost all Taiwanese investors in northern Vietnam do not operate plants in the two provinces, with the exception of acoustic components maker Poyun Enterprise, whicn runs assembly lines in Hai Duong, the sources said.

At the moment, Compal Electronics maintains operations in Vinh Phuc province near Honoi, and Foxconn operates plants in Bac Ning and Bac Giang provinces, while many other Taiwanese electronics firms cluster in the Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) in Hai Phong, a major industrial city in northern Vietnam, including network equipment maker Hitron Technologies, optoelectronics specialist Lite-On Technology, and TV ODM AmTran Technology, noted the sources.

Compal said its plant in Vinh Phuc is a 2-hour drive off Hai Duong and even farther off Quang Ninh and are running normally, but stressed it is enforcing stricter pandemic control and prevention measures than before.

Compal's plant in Vietnam is mainly engaged in manufacturing network equipment and computer docking stations, and has yet to mass produce notebooks. The company is building a second plant in the same complex at a cost of US$100 million, which is slated to start commercial production of consumer electronics devices in the second half of 2021.

Foxconn noted that its plants in northern Vietnam are maintaining regular production of computers, TV screens, network devices, auto components and other electronics components. The company also stressed it has been strictly enforcing self-health management among employees and related anti-virus measures while also closely monitoring pandemic developments in neighboring areas.
