MWC Shanghai 2021 has kicked off today with the exhibition being presented partly online and partly in physical venues in the wake of the pandemic. The organizers expect some 20,000 patrons to visit the showground in the 3-day event.

The trade fair focuses on four areas: 5G connectivity, AI, smart IoT and 5G innovation. China's telecom firms - China Telecom, China Mobile and China Telecom- and Huawei will showcase their latest 5G technologies and solutions. Intel, Qualcomm, STMicroelectronics, Ericsson, Nokia and Skyworks are also there.

Taiwan-based cloud solution provider Quanta Cloud Technology and network equipment and solution maker Accton Technology will highlight their cloud and datacenter network solutions at the show.

A 5G Innovation Zone at the tradeshow houses more than 80 startups presenting their innovations and solutions, including those for 5G applications and XR experience.

China-based handset vendors will optimize the opportunity to showcase their latest 5G phone models as they aim to ramp up their market shares.

5G phones are likely to account for 70% of China's total handset shipments in 2021, up from 50% seen a year earlier, said industry sources. China's top vendors, including Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, togehter will account for the lion's share of global 5G phone shipments in 2021.
